The Power of Active Aging
Covenant Village Celebrates Active Aging Week October 5–9
Covenant Village will celebrate Active Aging Week October 5–9, highlighting ways older adults can support their health, independence, and quality of life through physical, mental, and social engagement.
“Active aging is about finding meaningful ways to stay engaged in every aspect of life, across all dimensions of wellness,” said Wanda Flowers, Director of ARISE Wellness, a program within Covenant Village’s Department of Resident Well-Being. “Every step, stretch, conversation, and new experience can contribute to a stronger sense of health and well-being.”
Active Aging Week events will offer residents opportunities to nurture the mind, body, soul, and social connection. Activities will include group walks and a picnic at a local park, fitness classes and friendly competition, puzzles to challenge the mind, a gratitude wall, and an outdoor social at the Covenant Village Pavilion Park. Together, these experiences can support physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, and a sense of purpose.
“Regular physical activity can help people maintain the ability to perform everyday tasks, support mental health, improve cognitive function, and stay socially connected. Movement does not have to mean hours at a gym. Walking, gardening, dancing, and recreational activities can make it easier to build enjoyable movement into daily life,” Wanda added.
Exercise may help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood and self-confidence, and ease stress. It is also associated with sharper thinking and memory. Group activities and community events create opportunities to meet others, build friendships, and counter loneliness.
During Active Aging Week, residents are encouraged to discover new ways to move, connect, and engage. Whether taking a short walk, joining a fitness class, playing pickleball, or enjoying a game of shuffleboard, every activity is an investment in well-being.
Active Aging Week is a national initiative led by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and presented by Humana. It celebrates health, vitality, and active living for adults aged 50 and older, challenges outdated perceptions of aging, and promotes a vision of growing older defined by health, connection, and possibility.
