About Covenant Village

Covenant Village is a full-service, nonprofit Life Plan Community in the North Carolina Piedmont. We have earned a strong, long-standing reputation in our hometown of Gastonia, NC, since first opening our doors in 1982. The lush greenery of our beautiful landscaping and carefully maintained surroundings would be our finest asset if not for the grace of God and the engaging people who call Covenant Village home.

Our welcoming residents radiate warmth and purpose by engaging in active pursuits, seeking new possibilities, and embracing new friends. Covenant Village leadership and team members keep the residents’ independence and needs at the forefront of all actions and decisions to ensure a secure and caring community. We are a family-friendly ecumenical community as eleven faith communities worked to bring about Covenant Village.

Covenant Village provides the charm, grace, and security of small-town living. It is surprising to realize that our quiet and serene campus, tucked away among lush natural splendor, is conveniently located 20 miles west of Charlotte with easy access to I-85 and the Charlotte Douglas Airport and only an hour’s drive to mountain retreats. We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to everything that Covenant Village has to offer.

Our History

Upholding our early promises and founding principles

Covenant Village resulted from a bold solution to a community need more than 40 years ago. The Rev. Dr. James G. Stuart, Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, imagined a church-sponsored home for the elderly as part of his Doctor of Ministry project. At the time, Dr. Stuart was leading the congregation through a strategic visioning process. One of the potential initiatives on his list was the idea of a home for older adults. Dr. Stuart, along with the leadership of congregant Bill Lawson, worked to garner First Presbyterian Church’s support of this home.

Eventually, Stuart and Lawson not only won over the congregation but ten other faith communities, who recognized the need to create Covenant Village and make it as accessible as possible to older adults. The nine congregations raised more than $2.5 million, providing seed money for the initial $4.5 million project. By today’s dollars, a similar project would cost more than $20 million.

Covenant Village welcomed its first residents to apartment homes in 1982. Since then, the campus has enhanced its service to mature adults with the addition of a second apartment building, common areas, duplex cottages, life enrichment amenities, and a licensed Health Center with a dedicated memory care wing.

Over the decades, Covenant Village has continued and strengthened its relationships with these supportive faith communities. By remembering our early promises and honoring our legacy, we are currently planning to launch a visionary, opportunity-filled expansion project that will continue to realize our founder’s vision.

Covenant Village is a charitable, not-for-profit community organized to benefit the people who live here and their families. An ecumenical group of faith communities founded us on loving God and our neighbors. We honor that intent by supporting our residents as they stay involved in meaningful projects, social causes and engage in community involvement. Our service roots run deep. Our residents have much to offer the local community, and they gain rewards from their stewardship in return.
