Osteoporosis and Exercise
Strength, Balance, Reduce Risks
Living with osteoporosis can feel overwhelming, but one of the most helpful and empowering tools is regular exercise. With the right activities, you can strengthen your body, improve your balance, and lower your risk of falls and fractures. Even more importantly, staying active can help you feel more confident, independent, and in control of your health.
One of the greatest benefits of exercise is its ability to strengthen bones. Weight-bearing activities, like walking, dancing, or climbing stairs, encourage your body to maintain bone density. Strength training with weights or resistance bands also supports your bones by building the muscles around them, especially in areas like your hips and spine. These stronger muscles help protect your bones and support your everyday movements.
Exercise also plays a vital role in improving balance and coordination. Since falls are a major concern, activities like yoga, tai chi, or simple balance exercises can help you feel steadier on your feet. As your balance improves, you may feel more secure and confident going about your daily routine.
You may also find that regular movement helps reduce pain and improve your posture. Gentle exercise can ease stiffness, support your spine, and help your body stay properly aligned. Over time, this can make everyday tasks feel easier and more comfortable.
To get the most benefit, you can aim to include a mix of activities in your routine: weight-bearing exercises for your bones, strength training for your muscles, balance exercises for stability, and stretching for flexibility. Even small, consistent efforts can improve over time.
