Future Residents Enhance Community with Woodworking Shop
Article from the October issue of The Villager
What started as a fascination with Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys – along with an inquiring mind as a young child, led Steve Trimmer to a career in quality engineering roles for major manufacturing companies, including RCA, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool.
Able to both think outside the box and develop integrated engineering models, Steve applied these same talents at home as he began to purchase woodworking equipment and started completing projects around the house.
While Steve was revolutionizing technology at work and continuing to add new computer-controlled equipment to his woodworking supply, his wife, Mary, was blazing a trail in the healthcare profession, starting in Nursing, moving into healthcare informatics, and serving as the CEO for several hospitals. Their move to Gaston County was initiated through a job opportunity for Mary to serve as COO for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in 2007.
One of the primary reasons they purchased their current home in Armstrong Circle in 2008 was a small outbuilding in the backyard that Steve converted into a 1,000 sq. ft. workshop.
As Steve and Mary are making plans to move to a Stonecrest Villa, now under construction at Covenant Village, the couple presented CEO Dale Melton with the idea of donating the woodworking equipment to Covenant Village for use by residents and employees. Enthusiastic about this opportunity, Dale and his team have been meeting with the Trimmers to finalize an inventory of the equipment and plans for building a woodworking shop at Covenant Village to house the equipment. An architect is helping to determine the best location and design for the shop.
“We are very grateful for the Trimmers’ generosity in sharing this equipment with Covenant Village and welcome residents and future residents to join us in planning for this exciting addition to resident life enrichment – as a place for serious woodworking enthusiasts to complete projects and others to join in the fellowship around the workbenches,” explained Dale.
