Covenant Village Opens New Art Gallery
Covenant Village celebrated a milestone in its commitment to creativity and community with the opening of its new art gallery on August 25. The inaugural exhibition features local artist Scott Boyle and highlights the meaningful connection between senior living and the region’s vibrant arts community.
Titled “A Visual Explorer of Light and Beauty,” the exhibition brings together Boyle’s completed studio paintings with the smaller plein air studies and field sketches that inspired them. The pairing gives residents and visitors a rare opportunity to follow the artist’s creative process — from an initial observation made outdoors to a fully realized studio composition.
Plein air, a French phrase meaning “in the open air,” describes the practice of painting directly from the landscape. Artists working in this tradition seek to capture the changing light, atmosphere, and mood of a particular place and moment. Boyle’s paintings invite viewers to pause, look closely, and appreciate the beauty found in everyday surroundings.
Covenant Village already has a special connection to Boyle’s work. The senior living community is home to 14 original Scott Boyle studio paintings, many of which were commissioned or donated over two decades by residents, family members, and staff. Together, the works have created a distinctive collection that honors loved ones, preserves memories, and enriches the daily lives of those who live, work, and visit at Covenant Village.
The new gallery has been more than a year in the making. Its opening reflects Covenant Village’s belief that art is an essential part of a thriving senior living community. Beyond bringing beauty to a shared space, art can inspire conversation, awaken memories, encourage curiosity, and offer new ways for people to connect.
The gallery also strengthens ties between Covenant Village and the area’s active artist community. By showcasing local talent and creating opportunities for artists to discuss their inspiration and techniques, the space is designed to become a gathering place where residents, families, staff members, and guests can experience the arts together.
The inaugural exhibition was made possible through the efforts of many supporters. Kevin Stewart, who introduced Boyle to Covenant Village, provided encouragement and guidance throughout the project. Board member and local artist Carol Carstarphen contributed extensive planning and advocacy, while Shane Brown and the Property Services Team created the gallery’s physical space and layout. Michelle Melton’s love of art and appreciation for artistic expression also helped inspire and support the initiative.
Covenant Village leaders hope the gallery will become the foundation for a growing arts program, with future exhibitions introducing the community to additional artists, subjects, and creative traditions. Plans also include encouraging contributions toward an Arts Program Endowment to support future exhibitions and events.
With Boyle’s work as its first featured collection, the Covenant Village Art Gallery begins its story with a fitting message: light and beauty surround us, and art helps people of every generation take the time to notice the world around us.
