Active Living is the key

Active Aging Week will take place October 6-10, 2025.

The International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) launched the first Active Aging Week in 2003. The intent of this special emphasis was to celebrate and highlight the positive aspects of aging.

“The overarching goal of Active Aging Week is to challenge society’s negative perceptions of aging by demonstrating that individuals over 50 can thrive in all aspects of life, including physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational, and environmental domains, regardless of age or health status,” states ICAA.

At Covenant Village, we recognize and support active aging with an abundance of activities centered around Active Living across the eight dimensions of wellness identified by ICAA. We provide residents with opportunities to engage in wellness activities and exercise that promote the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles throughout their lifespan.

Harvard Health publishes articles on healthy habits and strategies for good health. Here is a short list of ways to focus on Active Living to stay healthy while aging:

  • Stretching daily improves circulation and promotes relaxation.
  • Next, it is important to stay hydrated, which improves brain health and supports digestion. Drinking water with every meal can help you stay hydrated and feel strong.
  • Movement is so important to our bone health, muscles, balance, and stamina. Moving only 30 minutes a day can make a big difference. Look for ways to engage in movement, like walking and group fitness classes. Standing up every hour can have a positive impact.
  • Enjoying a hobby is good for everyone’s overall health and mood.  Hobbies involve creativity, sensory engagement, and cognitive stimulation. It’s never too late to start a hobby. Lastly, remain social with your peers, friends, and family.
  • Social interactions can help reduce loneliness and protect against depression.

You can join our residents during “Active Aging Week,” October 6-10.  We have special events lined up, along with our regular wellness activities. We will host a scavenger hunt, a walk and picnic at Rankin Lake, a puzzle race, and a Grand Finale celebration with carnival games and refreshments. Residents and Priority members are welcome.

If you can’t join us during Active Aging Week, consider scheduling personal training or fitness coaching, a wonderful way to work on your fitness goals and create an exercise routine that works for you.  Take advantage of this opportunity in the ARISE Wellness Center.
