Active COVID Case Update: Current COVID-19 Outbreak Status

To:  Residents of Covenant Village

From: Dale Melton, CEO

Date:  November 19, 2020

With our current COVID-19 outbreak and the dynamic nature of it, we want to send out this update.

Active Cases

Monday’s mandatory Health Center (HC) Resident and Staff testing disclosed two additional HC Staff members who are positive.  Both are exhibiting mild symptoms but doing well.  Additionally, we have one new independent living (IL) Resident who has tested positive.  That brings our current active positive case count to nine (9).

We have six (6) Staff and three (3) Residents who are positive at this time.  The six (6) Staff are in either Food & Nutrition; Housekeeping; or Nursing.  All but one is in the Health Center.  One Resident is in the Health Center and doing well.  The other two (2) Residents are in independent living on the 2nd Floor of the B-Building, which was put on quarantine earlier this week.

Quarantined Floor

We continue to monitor and have quarantined all Residents on the 2nd Floor of the B-Building.  We took this action this week due to concerns that our Contact Tracing protocols uncovered.  Residents on this floor admitted to being in situations where no masks and no physical distancing was taking place.  We have seen a few symptoms in Residents on this floor.  All Residents on this floor were tested earlier this week.  We await the results of those tests.  All Residents are being monitored through our Health Center Staff and our Resident Nurses.

As a strong reminder:  No other Resident should be on that floor for a minimum of two (2) weeks.  Further, with any new positive cases, the quarantine will be extended out 14-days.

Campus-wide Shut Down

As a further reminder and out of an abundance of caution and good infection control mitigation, we shut down—for the entire campus—areas we had re-opened in the recent weeks and months.  As a result, for at least the next two weeks, the following will be closed:

  • Main Dining Room for all meals
  • Activities
  • Beauty Salon
  • All Common Areas
  • Library
  • Outdoor Visitations
  • Wellness Center

Thanksgiving Plans

We know the Holidays are significant, memorable, and important in many ways.  We would strongly encourage Residents to forego Thanksgiving plans with Families and Friends in the community this year.  If you go out for Holiday events and become exposed, believe you were exposed, or start having symptoms, you will be required to quarantine—not just voluntarily self-isolate—for 14 days.  That means you are not allowed out of your home at all—not for the mail, laundry, other errands, or to walk in the halls.  You will be on full quarantine.  Meals will continue to be delivered to you.

If you experience either of the following two situations, please be in contact with the Front Desk (704.867.2319) or Welcome Center (980.677.0618).

  • If you are still off-campus when you know you were potentially exposed or started having symptoms, you will be required to remain off-campus for 14-days or until you provide documentation that the person of concern tests negative.
  • If you are back on-campus when you learn you were potentially exposed or started having symptoms, please, contact immediately the Front Desk or Welcome Center. You will be required to fully quarantine for 14-days.

Open and transparent communication is absolutely vital for the safety of the Village.

Please, remember:  We have a sister community 20 minutes north of us with 110 active cases and 24 Resident deaths.  This virus is still actively present and remains dangerous to anyone, but particularly our population who are most vulnerable.

As we have shared all along, any positive cases, potential symptoms, or potential exposures are serious for us at Covenant Village.  The health and safety of our Residents, Staff, and larger community continue to be our highest priority.  We are in a period of significantly increased new daily cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in Gaston County.  We are now one of 10 NC Counties marked with the highest level of COVID severity by the State.

We CANNOT let our guard down.  We have a long way to go—particularly as the Fall and Winter Seasons settle in!

What should you continue to be doing when you are outside your home?

  • Wear a facemask at ALL TIMES while you are out (unless you are outside exercising alone). You MUST cover your nose and mouth so the mask can be effective!
  • Practice physical distancing of at least six (6) feet at ALL TIMES.
  • Wash your hands CONTINUALLY and use hand sanitizer in between.
  • Practice good cough etiquette.
  • Use common sense on what you should and should not do.
  • If you experience any of the COVID-19 related symptoms or are just not feeling well, you should contact the Arbor Wing Nurses Station at —704.917.7857.

We will continue to provide the latest information via community memos; Covenant Conversations on the internal TV channel and Facebook; as well as the Covenant Village website (https://covenantvillagenc.com/) and Facebook page.

For those of us who may have eased off our compliance with the above infection control guidance, use this time to re-evaluate your efforts and actions on behalf of our entire Village!   We are only as good as you are and as I am.   We will get through this—together!  A committed community conquer
