As a result of last week’s twice testing, we have two new Health Center (HC) positive COVID-19 cases. The positive test results were an outcome of the State’s current mandatory COVID testing for both Health Center Residents and Staff. One case is a HC Staff member, and the other is a HC Resident. Both were asymptomatic.
Good news: All involved are doing well, as the Health Center remains in lockdown.
Our Contact Tracing protocols did not uncovered any additional exposures with the HC Resident. We do believe an additional Staff member was exposed to the new positive Staff member. Out of an abundance of caution and effective protocols, that additional Staff member is quarantining at home.
Further good news: From previous rounds of testing, we did have one HC Resident and one HC Staff member who came off the active list last week after being cleared by the Gaston County DHHS office. They continue to be doing well.
As of today and in summary, Covenant Village has four active positive cases—three HC Staff members and the HC Resident. Two HC Staff tested positive from earlier rounds of testing. As the result of a private sitter who tested positive, we have three independent living Residents who are being quarantined. All are doing well and complying with the quarantine restrictions.
We were also notified by a Cottage Resident that their dentist office had informed the Resident of being exposed during a recent office visit. That brings to, at least, two cases where Residents were exposed in a dentist or physician office. That occurrence is likely to increase. Truly, no place is safe from potential exposure to this devastating virus.
If all of this information is confusing and difficult to keep up with, I truly understand as it changes daily; however, we want you to have all the information we can share. Additionally, the State requires we update Residents and HC POAs on any new positive cases.
As we have shared all along, any positive cases, potential symptoms, or potential exposures are serious for us at Covenant Village—even more so in our Health Center. The health and safety of our Residents, Staff, and larger community continue to be our highest priority. This virus is still actively present and remains dangerous to anyone, but particularly our population who are most vulnerable. We CANNOT let our guard down. We have a long way to go—particularly as the Fall and Winter Seasons settle in!
Good, good news—as of last week: Gaston County’s % Positive metric, which determines the testing frequency in the Health Center, has dropped below 10%, at least for now. That means we can move back to weekly mandatory testing today.
What should you continue to be doing when you are outside your home?
• Wear a facemask at ALL TIMES while you are out (unless you are outside exercising alone). You MUST cover your nose and mouth so the mask can be effective!
• Practice physical distancing of at least six (6) feet at ALL TIMES.
• Wash your hands CONTINUALLY and use hand sanitizer in between.
• Practice good cough etiquette.
• Use common sense on what you should and should not do.
• If you experience any of the COVID-19 related symptoms or are just not feeling well, you should contact the Arbor Wing Nurses Station at —704.917.7857.
We will continue to provide the latest information via community memos; Covenant Conversations on the internal TV channel and Facebook; as well as the Covenant Village website (https://covenantvillagenc.com/) and Facebook page.
For those of us who may have eased off our compliance with the above infection control guidance, use this time to re-evaluate your efforts and actions on behalf of our entire Village! We are only as good as you are and as I am. We will get through this—together! A committed community conquers COVID!!
